Here at the Doctor’s BrushPicks we feel strongly that it  is time to stamp out Mouth Cancer. The more aware you can be of the risk factors, and the symptoms of this insidious disease the better.

The next time you have a check up at the dentist please get them to do a mouth cancer check.

The British Dental Health Authority are leading the way on helping to raise awareness of this disease by creating the fantastic website, www.mouthcancer.org.

This disease has had more publicity lately with the high profile Mouth Cancer patient Michael Douglas.

What is Mouth Cancer?

It is cancer that occurs in the mouth, where the disease can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks and throat.

It has been thought of as an old man’s disease in the past. It is no longer true as the current research is showing that mouth cancer is becoming more common in younger patients and in women. It is increasing at the rate of a 1/3 more cases in the last decade than the decade before, a worrying statistic.

Unfortunately people with mouth cancer are more likely to die than those having cervical cancer or melanoma skin cancer.

Most cases of mouth cancer are linked to tobacco and alcohol.

Many recent reports have linked mouth cancer to the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is the major cause of cervical cancer and affects the skin that lines the moist areas of the body. HPV can be spread through oral sex, and research now suggests that it could soon rival smoking and drinking as one of the main causes of mouth cancer.

Mouth cancer can appear in different forms and can affect all parts of the mouth, tongue and lips.

Mouth cancer can appear as a painless mouth ulcer that does not heal normally. A white or red patch in the mouth can also develop into a cancer. It is important to visit your dentist if these areas do not heal within three weeks.

When you next have a dental check-up ask him to check you for Mouth Cancer.
